The Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Program, as a leader in the effort to end malaria- related illness and death, refines and develops tools and approaches, supports national programs, and gathers evidence and data to enable national governments to pursue malaria elimination.

PATH is recruiting a Provincial Coordinator for an implementation project of perennial malaria chemoprevention (PMC), previously known as intermittent preventive treatment for malaria in infants (IPTi), in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This is a GiveWell-funded project. The Provincial Coordinator will play a key role in the implementation of the intervention and evaluation activities in the eight health zones of the Kongo Central Province.

Specific responsibilities include :

  • Coordinate implementation, facilitate key activities, including evaluation activities and manage day-to-day aspects of the PMC pilot in Kongo Central.
  • Provide support in strengthening supply chains for ensuring uninterrupted supply of PMC procurements.
  • Work closely with partners to strengthen community engagement activities.
  • Ensure the timely collection, and compilation of health zone data.
  • Supervise team members based in the province, including ensuring team cohesion and communications
  • Liaise and manage stakeholders at the Provincial Health Division, including the PNLP and EPI team, health zone teams, and project health facilities in the implementation of PMC project activities.
  • Provide technical support to project health facilities in the province; encourage linkages and coordinate inputs to meet performance indicators and milestones.
  • Undertake supportive supervision visits to monitor and evaluate project progress in selected health zones and share feedback for planning corrective actions.
  • Be responsible for understanding the research methods and research objectives of the Project in collaboration with the technical team of the Project and the research implementing partners.
  • Work with the research implementing partner and the project technical team to support the implementation of evaluation activities including: logistics, troubleshooting, research personnel management and relationship building with Ministry of Health programmes, other stakeholders and study communities;
  • Work with the research implementing partner to supervise research staff and ensure that they follow the research protocols and data collection plan.
  • Contribute to the preparation of abstracts and scientific manuscripts of the project in collaboration with the technical team, and the research implementing partner.
  • Prepare and submit monthly activity report to PMC Study Lead.
  • Support in the documentation of learnings, results, successes, challenges, and dissemination
  • Coordinate PMC activities at the provincial level closely with technical team based in the Kinshasa office, as well as the Senior Project Administrator.
  • Undertake travel to health zones up to 30-40% of the time for planning, implementing, and monitoring the key project activities.
  • Ensure representation of the project to all stakeholders (Ministry of Public Health, NMCP, EPI, PRONANUT and other relevant health institutions at provincial and local level, including implementing partners in multiple malaria prevention strategies).

Required Skills and Experience

  • Advanced degree in public health, epidemiology, science or medicine, public policy, or equivalent degree required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional experience working with international donor organizations, civil society, and the Ministry of Health.
  • Experience supporting public health projects and evaluations. Experience with drug-based strategies, malaria, or EPI activities is a plus.
  • Superior coordination skills in managing dispersed project teams with demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff and partners to provide technical assistance to implementation activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working within the health system in DRC, ideally at the provincial and zonal levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills with ability to interact with diverse colleagues and partners
  • Exceptional problem solving, bridge building, and diplomacy abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written French and English communication skills
  • The candidate must be a self-starter and committed to performing their duties with minimal direct and day-to-day supervision.
  • Comfortable working in a flexible and changing environment, with ability to adjust plans and direction in response to feedback and the iterative nature of the project
  • Knowledge of and experience working in Kongo Centrale province is a plus
