Org. Setting and Reporting
 
This position is located within the Office of the Director of Mission Support in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). The incumbent will be based in Kinshasa and will report to the Senior Administrative Officer.
 
Responsibilities
 
The Associate Field Translator will be responsible for the following duties:
• Translates from local language(s) to designated UN working language(s) and vice-versa, a variety of texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative scientific and technical, respecting deadlines and using appropriate terminology.
• Provide short summary of documents for review and processing.
• Translate internal communication/broadcast from French to English and vice-versa.
• Provide live interpretation during meetings.
• Assists in matters of terminology and style to ensure uniformity and quality;
Resolves translation/editorial issues (i.e. clarification on ambiguities, technical meanings, etc.) through consultation with authors.
• Aims at high standard of accuracy, consistency and fidelity to the spirit, style and nuances of the original;
• Observes the established terminology and usage and ensures, as far as possible, consistency with other translators working on similar documents.
• Uses all sources of reference, information and consultation relevant to the text at hand and carries out any research required;
• Maintains a certain speed and volume of output, taking into account the difficulty of the text and the specified deadlines;
• Identifies new terminology material for the consideration of revisers and terminology managers;
• Perform other administrative/office support duties as required

Education
 
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in Language, Literature or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
 
 
A certificate in translation or English language literature is desirable.
 
Work Experience
 
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible relevant experience in translation is required.
 
Languages
 
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in both English and French is required.
 
Assessment
 
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
 
Special Notice
 
This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. Applicants for positions in the General Service and related categories must be authorized to work for the United Nations in the duty station where the position is located. Eligible applicants selected from outside the duty station are responsible for any expenses in connection with their relocation to the duty station. United Nations Considerations

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
